With a life long history of dinghy and offshore multihull racing, why a Class globe 580 now? 

In 1979, I built and sailed a 12'6" (125 class) dinghy from Brisbane to Townsville a distance of approximately 1,400 kilometres, visiting the offshore islands of Lady Musgrave, Herron and Middle Percy Islands.  

While camped at Middle Percy Island, I found a sign left by John Guzzwell during his circumnavigation on Trekka. 

I acquired a copy of John's book, Trekka Round the World, and have had an interest in small boat voyaging ever since.

We are building a Class Globe 5.80 mini yacht in our backyard in a Bayside Suburb of Brisbane, Australia.  As part of the class registration, to allow the class organisers and the designer to monitor compliance with class rules from anywhere in the world.  While we have considerable experience in sailing and boatbuilding, blogging and social media are a different matter. For us, this blog is very likely to be the hardest part of the build.  We hope this blog will also provide other builders with useful information and tips along the way.

First - Clear the Shed

  Like all great sheds, ours is jammed packed with useful and some not so useful stuff accumulated since our last boat build.   While our shed clearing programme is in full swing, we are spending our spare time sourcing materials, sharpening tools and generally taking planning our work so that once we commence work, we will have a clear run at the project with as few other distractions as possible.
